Beach scene activities
Beach scene activities to encourage communication and literacy. Beach scene blank and selection of items you might find at the beach to cut out and stick on to beach scene. Colours board.
Populated beach scene. Symbols with words (PCS symbols) and words only, of objects in populated beach scene. 2 copies of symbols with words and words only - one copy with black outline and one copy with colourful semantics coloured outlines.
Lessons
Blank beach scene: Make own scene with cut outs (can add own drawings). Discuss what you see/do at the beach.
Populated beach scene: Discuss and make sentences about what you can see whichever way you like; verbally, with symbols, with words, with low-tech supports, with a communication device. Colours chat board included.

A Spring Walk story bundle
Story where characters go for a walk. They see signs of Spring and hear different animals on a farm. Based on a multisensory story by Fiona MacGregor at FreeRange ArtFarm and adapted using PCS Symbols. The story is separated into two books which can be used separately or together.
I’ve added tactile materials to each of the pages to incorporate more sensory input. For each ‘What’s that sound?’ page, I play a recording of the corresponding animal sound.
Also included: A spring scavenger hunt with additional symbols for each item.

Feelings and emotions activity
Activity to work on feelings and emotions using PCS symbols and words.

Activity ideas:
I drew faces on pringles lids to be placed on top of the A4 sheet with blank face to change emotions. Match circles with different feelings, symbols, or words. Can also write words on laminated white sheet to match.
Read story or watch video clip, change face to match emotions.

I use this activity when talking about what we wear in different weather/ seasons.
Ideas for use:
Laminate page 1 (body) - personally I prefer glossy laminating pouches for this activity.
Laminate page 2 and cut out individual items.
I used ‘Tack-it over and over’ (can be found on Amazon) to add to the back of the clothing items but Blu Tack or velcro could be other options to stick them on the body.

Love Heart Scavenger Hunt/Sensory bin
Scavenger hunt checklist of different coloured love hearts with additional symbol cards of each item. Supported with Boardmaker PCS symbols. While looking in books, looking around the environment or looking on screen, tick off the items as you see them.
Alternative idea: use the additional symbols to hide in a sensory bin, around the room, outside. Tick off as you find them.

Maisie and the Snowmonster - Winter Story
This is a winter story adapted with Boardmaker PCS symbols. Written by Fiona MacGregor, this is a multisensory story, therefore has plenty of scope for including sensory and tactile elements.
This pack includes the story, with text, additional symbols with colour-coded outlines in line with Colourful Semantics colours and 2 communication boards - one colour-coded using the modified Fitzgerald colour key and one without colours.
